Our Roots

Sourcery was founded in 2020 on the belief that the future of agriculture holds incredible potential, yet the existing traditional commodity trade market system that has been in place for nearly two centuries is holding it back—trade needs to be transformed for good.

Today, this archaic commodity trade system remains overly complex, fragmented, volatile, opaque and cannot deliver the commercial, social and environmental solutions at scale that are necessary for the future of industry and life on our planet.

We began as a professional services firm, yet in 2023 began to transition to becoming a digital sourcing and trade solution so that we could accelerate the transformation of trade for good at scale.

Together, we are committed to transforming trade for good.

The Chasm

Between consumers, brands, and retailers on one end of the value chain, and growers, processors, manufacturers, and traders on the other, a persistent supply and demand disconnect exists—what we call “the chasm.”

This chasm limits the full potential of agri-commodities and other raw materials, undermining those committed to growing food, fibre, timber, and extracting mined resources—and those who depend on them for industry and life.

At the heart of this divide is an overly complex, fragmented, extractive, and opaque trade system, rooted in policies and practices that are centuries old and fundamentally unfit for the future of agriculture and trade.

These outdated systems are designed around faceless, fungible transactions that obscure upstream value, restrict market access, and enable unfair competition through complex Wall Street financial instruments derived from physical commodities but have nothing to do with how they are grown, processed, manufactured or traded among those rely on these commodities for their lives and livelihoods. The result is:

  • Extracted value from rural communities, industry actors, and environmental potential to preserve life on our planet.

  • Suppressed margins for growers and direct industry actors who depend on these raw materials for their products, businesses, and livelihoods.

  • Volatility driven by speculative trading—where short-term profit gained by those who have never stepped foot on a farm or factory floor, at the expense of those who live and work on farms and in factories.

  • A system that discourages investment, erodes trust, and blocks progress in transparency, traceability, technology, and innovative needed for true sustainability.

Because of this instability, those who want to invest—growers, manufacturers, traders, and even brands—are unable to take on the risk. The sector remains trapped in a short-term, destructive cycle that enriches speculators while eroding natural resource and ecosystem and stifling long-term value creation for those committed to transformation.

Any attempts at meaningful commercial, social, environmental innovation and investment are often superficial or solely reliant on philanthropy, failing to enable market transformation at scale.

As a result, the full market potential of agri- and other commodities remains unrealized—threatening the future of rural communities, industry, and life on our planet.

There is a better way forward.

Through decades of collective experience—from growers to brands, traders to finance to civil society—the Sourcery team, alongside early Partners developed the Connect Platform.

This technology enables the global trade community to connect through an open digital global marketplace built for transparency, efficiency, and trust— protecting buyers and sellers and unlocking new value across market intelligence, finance, logistics, and the monetization of performance transactional and impact data at scale.

Sourcery is a member-owned, for-profit, global cooperative corporation, led and owned by its Partners and investors.

Blue Ocean Strategy

The Digital Transformation of Trade for Good.

Sourcery began as a trade facilitation and advisory services firm, helping to facilitate transactions, collect impact data, and develop innovative finance and trade solutions on behalf of our early Partners (clients). These clients included brands and retailers, manufacturers, civil society organizations, certification bodies, and technology solution providers.

Through this experience, we developed the Sourcery solution framework of Transparent Trade, Intelligent Impact, and Innovative Finance (formally the Direct-to-Grower™ Solution), a comprehensive set of services and resources that empower our Partners to drive the transformation of trade for good.

While the success of Sourcery was evident by our growth and the growing efforts across the sector to adopt Direct-to-Grower™ approaches to trade, we recognized the need to scale our interventions and impact. We needed to extend these solutions across entire businesses, supply chains, and eventually the whole sector—inviting millions of growers, traders, manufacturers, and brands to participate in transforming trade for good.

The Connect Platform is the digital realization of that vision—the transformation of trade for good, at scale.

Let’s transform all

trade for good.

We are building a global community through technology that aims to transform all trade for good.

Four colored shapes representing different categories: blue circle for Fibre and Textiles, green triangle for Food and Timber with NTFPs, light blue square for Metal and Minerals, and dark blue hexagon for Energy and Biosynthetics.

Although we are rooted in fibre and textiles—this is just the beginning.

The challenges and opportunities that exist today in cotton are parallel to those in most traded agri- forest and hard commodities—unnecessary complexity, fragmentation, price volatility, value suppression, resource depletion and climate change.

As Sourcery grows and expands its solution into many other industries—we will work to bring together these trading communities together through technology so they too can transform trade for good.
